The study techniques below can make you feel more confident in your studies. Using study techniques will help you plan out time to study instead of scrambling at the last minute and being overwhelmed with how much work you may have. It is better to have a plan for your studying rather than feeling overwhelmed. With that being said, I did some research on various study techniques that may work FOR YOU to check out and try to help eliminate some stress while getting work. I also recommend knowing what kind of learning method helps you (auditory, visual, kinesthetic, reading/writing). Knowing how you learn will help you grasp the information better while studying. I prefer this quiz if you do not know your learning style. https://learningstylequiz.com/quiz/start This quiz is meant to help you. It is not mean to base your personality on what it tells you.
Reminder: Time is a resource, not something meant to work against you.
Pomodoro Technique
TIPS
- Clear distractions so that you can actually focus for 25 mins
- Write out what you want to focus on for each 25 minute interval. I would suggest the same topic unless you already know the information well.
- Your 5 minute break should not be spent on your phone because it can add on stress. Sitting quietly can help the brain rewire so you can learn faster.
- You could instead repeat TWICE rather than four times. According to Andrew Huberman, a neurobiologist at Stanford, he claims that the brain has trouble focusing for longer than 90 mins. However, Einstein was known to use the Pomodoro Technique so see what works for YOU.
Feynman Technique
TIPS
- This could be done after the Pomodoro Technique.
- Simplify the topic as much as possible while teaching to others or speaking about it aloud. This will help both of you to better understand.
- Make sure to keep your information organized and not jumping from one random point to the next. This can be distracting.
- Make sure you are confident in what you are teaching. This takes practice.
Leitner Method
(FREE DOWNLOAD INCLUDED BELOW)
TIPS
- Don’t be discouraged if you have to move back to Box 1. We all forget sometimes.
- This method is great for a big test or exam such as a final exam or a state exam.
- Do not overload your flashcards with information, keep it simple so you can actually remember.
If you do not want to make physical flashcards, I made a downloadable digital version that you can use to move questions to each box. Click on the picture below to open the download. Make sure to click “duplicate” so all of your personal edits will be saved.
Reward-Based Learning Technique
Tips:
- Make the reward something simple after a study session, such as a sweet treat. You know what you like. If you study a lot, eat your treats in moderation.
- The challenge can be something like studying for a certain amount of time or passing a practice test.
