Choosing Your College Major

The big question of: "Should I Follow my Passions or Follow the Money?"

What is a major?

A major is an area of study that you choose to specialize in. For example, if you choose to be a computer science major, you will take classes that focus on coding, problem-solving, and whatever else you would need to help you prepare for a career in tech.

Picking a major can be an uneasy discussion. Some people believe that one should pick a major based on what will make the most income. Others believe to major in something that you are passionate about. Some choose to double major because they want skills and knowledge in multiple areas.

If you are stuck between what major to choose, weigh the pros and cons. Get an idea of what you see yourself doing in the future and go from there. If you are not sure yet, then you can start off by taking GenEd classes to help you see what you could be interested in. You could also switch your major in the future. According to US News and World Report, a third of undergraduate students will switch their major before earning a degree.

After you decide a major, see what your job opportunities would look like after graduating or think about how your skills could benefit you later on in life. You can look up jobs that relate to your major and look up the average income for that job. When looking up the average income, make sure to consider where you would be geographically.

Overall, do not let this process overwhelm you. It is okay to not have it all figured out by the first day of college. There is grace. Speaking with parents, guardians, or counselors could really benefit you and help you choose a major that will benefit you and your career.
