Embracing Rest in the Hustle Culture

A Letter to Hardworking Souls

Hey, hardworking individual who has probably been working hard all week, juggling work or school and maybe overwhelmed. This one is for my people who maybe find validation in work/school or who are just simply busy people. This is for the people who feel guilty for taking a break…

Did you know that it is perfectly okay to rest? You may have known and even encouraged others to take a break but have you given yourself the same privilege? To stop and take a breather?

Now, this could be an insane blog to write about while living in the hustle culture. All we hear is “work, work, work”. I do.

Honestly, rest can be hard. It can be hard because I forget that I am not the one in control of everything. If I was, I would have a perfect life. If you were, you would have a perfect life. Look, some of us catch a little fever and have to call out of work or school even if we have 50,000 things to do. Not everything is predictable or goes the way we want it even if we work work work all of the time.

Now, trust me, I am all for working. I actually have to remind myself sometimes not to find my validation in perfectionism and how I perform at work or school. I am a go-getter who is determined so when I am told to rest or have to rest, I feel FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) sometimes. That may sound crazy but if I have a day off and I see other people working hard, it makes me want to neglect my rest and sanity sometimes. I am not proud to say it but it is true.

It is okay for me to sit back. The culture does tell us to “work work work” yet all people wanna post about is being on vacation. Which one is it? Is it celebrating and enjoying work or rest? Why not both.

How can we rest without feeling guilty? This was hard for me for a while. I felt like I was wasting my days away whenever I would rest or simply take a nap too long. I can rest without feeling guilty because I remember that I am a human being. Sometimes I just need to be. I am not a human doing all the time. I am a human being. Professional athletes will work until they hurt themselves then be forced to rest and recover. People will work themselves until they are sick.

Realistically, do you like being around people who are stressed and overwhelmed from working all of the time? I do not think any of us do, so let us not be that person for anyone else.

Hey, you are doing great. Continue to take steps to achieve your dreams. YOLO. Make it count. Also find time to sit down though and simply take in life. Maybe get outside to get some fresh air. Go get yourself some Starbucks. Sit down and watch a movie. Enjoy being a human being, not a human doing all the time. Your work may be more efficient if you allow yourself to take a break and not feel guilty for it.

With lots of love,
